Diamonds, Day 29 – What’s Next for Diamonds…

This month flew by! And in terms of ideas and storefronts, we’ve only scratched the surface. Just last week, Will Simmons of Omahype, tipped me off to a treasure trove of Diamonds on Hamilton and Military. I could spend another month alone just exploring these two streets.

But now we’re turning this project over to YOU. The Diamonds series will continue, but instead of it featuring our ideas, we will run a guest post each week from one of you. We can’t wait to see what your visions for these buildings are! If you’ve got an idea and are interested in contributing, contact us.

In July, we’re also adding two new series –  It’s Got Juice and Fool’s Gold.

It’s Got Juice will celebrate all of the awesome Omaha’s already got going on. We’ll feature great local businesses and interview their owners. The series will start in, where else, BENSON! So many exciting things happening there.

Fool’s Gold will feature advice on how to open your own business – DIY style and on a shoestring budget. A fool’s errand for sure. We’ll cover everything from how to spot a shitty landlord to where to find funding and a good plumber.

We opened Daily Grub with a $10,000 micro loan from the Omaha Small Business Network. That’s it. That’s all we had. We found an old bar a couple blocks off Leavenworth to rent. We renovated it, made furniture and lighting, bought our second hand equipment and purchased enough food supply to get us through the week. On opening day we had $200 left in our bank account. We crossed our fingers and hoped we would make enough that first week to buy food for the next week. We didn’t do it to make money. We didn’t do it to gentrify a neighborhood. We did it because it was in our guts to do it.

You can do it too. We’d love to help.

  1. I’m super pumped about Fools Gold! I heard that the folks at Drift Station are working on a similar project for galleries. LOVE.
